Gazebo foundations made of concrete blocks, screw piles or a slab

Brown wooden gazebo with a hip roof on a wide wooden deck

The foundation carries the weight of the gazebo, and the wooden floor and the whole frame rest on it. Wooden gazebos stand on concrete blocks, concreted piles, screw piles or a concrete slab. The type is chosen to suit the site and the soil. For LatvijasKoks.lv gazebos the foundation and assembly are already included in the price, and a 3 x 3 m gazebo costs from 2600 EUR. All models with prices are listed in the gazebo catalogue.

Why a gazebo needs a foundation

The foundation spreads the weight of the gazebo evenly and keeps the frame from settling. It has to be level, because any unevenness later shows in the floor.

The frame floor of the gazebo (a timber frame to which the floorboards are fixed) rests on the foundation. The catalogue states that the timber frame floor of the classic 4 x 4.5 m gazebo is treated with an antiseptic, a product that protects wood against rot and wood-decaying fungi.

Types of gazebo foundation

Foundation types for a wooden gazebo
Foundation type What it is Where it is used
Concrete blocks Separate concrete blocks under the frame, levelled to one height LatvijasKoks.lv terraces without an earlier foundation
Concreted piles Supports set into the ground and fixed with concrete Classic 4 x 4.5 m gazebo in the catalogue
Screw piles Threaded metal piles screwed into the ground Chosen after assessing the site
Concrete slab or paving A continuous concrete or paved area under the whole gazebo Gazebo on a paved area

Concrete blocks

For a concrete block foundation, separate blocks are placed under the gazebo frame and levelled to one height. The LatvijasKoks.lv terraces page says that a terrace with no earlier foundation is most often placed on a base of bricks or concrete blocks so that the weight spreads evenly.

Concreted piles

For a pile foundation, separate supports called piles are set into the ground, levelled and fixed with concrete. The classic 4 x 4.5 m gazebo is listed in the catalogue with levelled, concreted pile foundations.

Screw piles

A screw pile is a threaded metal pile that is screwed into the ground. Whether screw piles suit a particular site is assessed before work starts.

Concrete slab or paved area

A concrete slab is a continuous layer of concrete under the whole gazebo. If the garden already has a paved or concrete area, the gazebo can be installed on it. The catalogue shows this with the grey 4 x 4.5 m gazebo.

Ground frost depth in Latvia

The Latvian building code LBN 003-19 "Būvklimatoloģija" (building climatology) sets the climate figures used in construction. It also gives the standard ground frost depth, meaning how deep ground without snow cover freezes in winter (the average of the deepest values of each winter). The table shows the frost depth that can be expected on average once in 2, 10 and 100 years.

Standard frost depth of clay soil (LBN 003-19, table 15)
Place Once in 2 years Once in 10 years Once in 100 years
Riga 59 cm 91 cm 120 cm
Liepāja 46 cm 78 cm 104 cm
Ventspils 39 cm 66 cm 89 cm
Daugavpils 78 cm 110 cm 140 cm
Alūksne 88 cm 119 cm 149 cm

The table covers clay soil, which makes up 56 % of soils in Latvia. Sandy soil freezes deeper, and the code allows its frost depth to be found by multiplying the clay soil values by a factor of 1.2. In Riga, for example, sandy soil freezes to about 109 cm once in 10 years. Coastal towns freeze less deeply than Latgale and Alūksne.

That is why the foundation type and depth for a particular gazebo are chosen after assessing the site and the soil, before work starts.

What gazebo foundations cost

In the LatvijasKoks.lv gazebo catalogue the foundation and assembly are included in the gazebo price, so the foundation does not have to be ordered separately. Only delivery costs extra, about 50-150 EUR within Latvia depending on the distance.

How the foundation is made

LatvijasKoks.lv prepares the gazebo parts in its workshop. The parts are then brought to the site, where the foundation is made and the gazebo is assembled. The process is described in more detail in the article Gazebo making.

The gazebo can also be delivered unassembled for self-assembly. In that case the foundation type and dimensions are best agreed when ordering.

Foundations and building documents

When a gazebo or shelter in Latvia needs only an explanatory note or a notification and when it needs a building permit is explained in the article Does a gazebo need a building permit. This is general information about Latvian rules, not legal advice. The final answer for a specific property comes from the local building authority.

Frequently asked questions

What foundation does a wooden gazebo need?

Wooden gazebos stand on concrete blocks, concreted piles, screw piles or a concrete slab. The type is chosen to suit the site and the soil, and the foundation must be level so the gazebo does not settle.

Is the foundation included in the gazebo price?

How deep does the ground freeze in Latvia?

According to the LBN 003-19 code, once in 10 years clay soil freezes to 91 cm in Riga, 78 cm in Liepāja and 110 cm in Daugavpils. Sandy soil freezes deeper.

Can a gazebo be installed on paving?

Yes. A gazebo can also be installed on a paved or concrete area. The catalogue shows the grey 4 x 4.5 m gazebo installed this way.

What are screw piles?

A screw pile is a threaded metal pile that is screwed into the ground. Whether it suits a particular site is assessed before work starts.
