A wooden terrace by the house extends your living space outdoors – a place for morning coffee, family dinners and having friends over. This article covers what to know before building a terrace, the most popular options and what makes up the cost.
Where to put the terrace?
- By the house entrance or living room – the most convenient option for everyday use.
- On the south or west side – more evening sun.
- Separately in the garden – for example, by a pond or together with a gazebo.
Terrace with or without a roof?
An open terrace is the simplest and cheapest option. In the Latvian climate, however, a covered terrace lets you use it on rainy days and protects the wooden floor, so it lasts longer.
- Polycarbonate terrace roof – lets light in, so rooms inside stay bright.
- Metal roof – strong and long-lasting.
- Shingle roof – matches the house roof.
We build a covered terrace attached to the house as a wooden extension.
Terrace floor and materials
The most popular choice is grooved decking boards in softwood – they're natural, attractive and less slippery. For a long-lasting terrace it's important to:
- use quality planed boards;
- leave small gaps between boards for drainage and wood expansion;
- treat the wood with decking oil or paint and renew it every couple of years.
You can also buy decking and cladding boards from us – see our cladding board offer.
Terrace foundations
If the house already has a foundation for a terrace, the job is simpler. If not, the terrace is usually set on concrete blocks or post foundations. A proper foundation protects the terrace from settling and moisture.
What makes up the cost of building a terrace?
- Area – terrace size in square metres.
- Foundations – existing foundations or new blocks/posts.
- Flooring material – board type and treatment.
- Roof and walls – an open terrace or one with a roof, railings or glazing.
- Steps and railings.
Since every terrace is different, we calculate the cost individually from your measurements and wishes.
Terrace combined with a gazebo
If you are also planning a gazebo, it can be built together with a terrace or step – see examples in our gazebo catalogue.
How we work: from 3D design to installation
For standard designs, we already have a ready 3D design we can send and show you – you'll see how the finished structure will look before you order.
For non-standard designs, our specialist visits and takes measurements. Then we prepare a 3D design or sketch. Once you approve it, we make all the parts in our workshop, bring them over and install the structure on site.
